The Modesty Issue

Written by my wonderful husband :)

Yesterday, on my way home from work I saw a young dolled up girl with a questionable looking guy at the Branch Ave subway station having sexual intimacy with their clothes on. They groped each other, sat on each others' laps, and mimicked very sexual gestures for at least 20 minutes. They were off some way in the distance from where most of the travelers were seated, but very much in view. In fact, as many walked right pass them there seemed to be no indication that they were embarrassed or even took notice of those walking by.
I immediately thought to myself, "she has no shame." Well, he has no shame either, but that wasn't as surprising. I kept thinking, "She doesn't even understand how she's degrading her self...or how she's being degraded. This guy is basically parading her around as a whore...in public...in broad daylight. At least cover your shame" I thought to myself.
God's word tells me not to marvel, not to even look on such wickedness, though I found it hard not to be captivated by such a sight.
Before I was too deep in my own self-righteousness I was reminded of myself when I was a teenager...doing the very same things...in public even. I was no stranger to this and yet I couldn't help but wonder why this young girl was so ignorant, so careless of her own dignity. I mean, I do understand of course, how sin blinds, how sin doesn't actually make any sense, how when we become so deep in sin we are oblivious to how foolish it makes us look...even as one person noted that sin is "self inflicted nonsense" Yes, I know these things but I'm always surprised.
This guy was disgracing her in public...AND SHE WOULD PREFER IT THAT WAY.
You know, it's fitting that I should talk about the modesty issues that plague the church right now. It's really no strange thing that unbelievers would be so immodest in their conduct but when we have professing Christians engaging in such conduct or "wearing" the part is an entirely different thing. This girl was merely behaving as a prostitute. Is this not what a girl does when she dresses in clothing that brings attention to her body and not her character?
We live in a culture that prizes beauty and self-esteem. We find our value in how we look and appear to others. (HOW CHEAP). If we do not fit the image of the media woman then we are not confident in who we are. Instead of finding one's confidence in what Christ has done for us, we'd rather place that confidence in how we look. Christian women are caught in a stronghold here. Where scripture tells us ""Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised"(Proverbs 31:30), women would rather be praised for their good looks or their sexy clothing. And then other professing believers, some even in ministry would come along side them and praise them. THIS IS COMPLETELY BACKWARDS!
In our generation, what was considered ONLY the attire of a prostitute is now everyday wear. What was considered underclothes is now the casual bathing suit. Women find their glory in looking skinny, sexy, and showing off skin. Does not scripture tell women to find their glory in godliness?
"Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious." (1 Peter 3:3, 4)
Sisters, are you disgracing yourself in what you wear just like that young woman I mentioned earlier?
"likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works." (1 Timothy 2:9, 10)
"And behold, the woman meets him, dressed as a prostitute, wily of heart. She is loud and wayward; her feet do not stay at home; now in the street, now in the market, and at every corner she lies in wait. She seizes him and kisses him, and with bold face she says to him,
With much seductive speech she persuades him; with her smooth talk she compels him.
Let not your heart turn aside to her ways; do not stray into her paths, for many a victim has she laid low, and all her slain are a mighty throng. Her house is the way to Sheol, going down to the chambers of death." (Proverbs 7:10-13, 21, 25-27)
Are you dressing like the women who lead men to Hell? Let it not be so...let this not be said of you.
HUSBANDS!!! IS THIS YOUR WIFE??? Are you loving your wives? Are you caring for her purity on facebook and Instagram? Are you protecting her honor by not allowing her to post scandalous photos of herself? Or are you standing right next to her in those photos as she flirts with your brothers through her clothing...as she leads them down to Sheol? Are you smiling and liking her photos as many men also take delight in her?

Hebrews 12:1-2

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God's throne.

Confused? Let me explain. At the age of 13 I begged my mother to perm my hair so that I could be like everyone else at school. After that I worshiped self and was consumed me the desire to be loved and accepted in other words worshiped by my peers. I wanted to seduce men with my hair and body and stir in envy in the hearts of women so that they would wish they were like me. I was very proud and took pleasure in vain things that lead straight to hell. Praise God almighty for snatching me from that path and placing me on this hard and narrow road that leads to life for His name's sake. After Salvation, I continued to perm my hair and don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that perming your hair is sinful. Every time I got a perm, there was the temptation to get in that mindset again. I wanted to be noticed, I wondered whether or not others were envious, if other men noticed and were moved just silly stuff. After I met my husband, he encouraged me to go natural not because he knew of my struggle but just because he was curious about what my natural hair texture was. I agreed, thought it would be fun and so did it. The months after that were the MOST HUMBLING MONTHS OF MY LIFE!!! I woke in the morning and I couldn't just pull my hair up or brush my hair and go out. It took a long time every morning to tame my hair and make it some what presentable before heading out. It was torture, I felt so ugly and unkept. I was embarrassed no longer had my head held up and my back straight longing for the attention of others who I would pass by I was instead wishing I was invisible and was shocked everytime a person addressed me publically. During that time I was also learning about modesty and how my clothes shouldn't expose my frame but cover it so I was looking a mess most days. Not knowing what to wear and definitely not knowing what to do with my hair! Later on that year 2011 it was time for Tyrell and I to marry and so after after 6 months of persevering I gave up and got a perm so that I would feel/look "beautiful" on my wedding day. Too bad I took my insecurities down the isle with me. I had the make up on, a nice dress, my permed hair and yet felt ugly. As the ceremony went on I saw Tyrell and was consumed with anxiety as we prepared to kiss for the first time. Thinking about standing at the altar still makes my heart race with panic as I ponder on the reality that we had to do that publically. Anyway, after the wedding I vowed not to get another perm. I continued with God's help and began to embrace this new life our Lord was calling me to. Over time, I learned to focus on serving our Lord and of course submitting to my husband. It was a very hard and long road but I learned alot about what it means to be a woman of a meek and quiet spirit. I also learned that we women can be loud without opening our lips. We can be loud with the way we carry ourselves, the clothes we wear, the way we do our hair, our make up and so much more. After examining myself and repenting, I finally cut all my permed hair on December 11th 2012. I'm really grateful for God's patience and my husband's support through this transition. I'm learning more about modesty and what to wear to look presentable. I'm also learning what true beauty is and what being meek looks and feels like. Yes there were times I broke down but this was so worth it. Throwing off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, so that I could run the race marked out for me. Not sure what you guys may be facing or struggling with but I encourage you to examine your hearts, pray and lay aside every weight that slows you down, especially the sin that so easily trips you up.

Be Blessed family!

Make-Up: My Reality

I've been examining myself and wrestling with this idea for a long time.
Why do I wear make-up?
what's my motivation?
What is God's Will for me in this area?

This weekend has been one of the toughest for me spiritually but praise God almighty for pursuing me and revealing to me that which lurks in my own heart.

Confession:
My dear sisters, I wear make-up because I want to be noticed as a beautiful prize to be obtained. I want the admiration of others. I want my husband to be complimented when others notice my beauty and I want my husband to walk about proudly knowing that he has a beautiful wife by his side.
Sad... I know but true.

The idea of going to a huge event and not wearing any make-up to enhance or draw attention to my "unique" features as I've been told in the past, makes me want to just stay home and not fellowship with others. I don't want to go anywhere unless I feel as beautiful as the other women in the room. If I went, I would feel embarrassed and would hardly be able to hold up conversation or hold my head up because I would feel so disqualified and undone.

As a Christian woman and soon to be mother, I know I am to be set apart for the Glory of God. Which is why I'm guessing the Lord is pruning me in such a manner. What do I believe? What is of more value to me? Is it "beauty"(which isn't beauty at all) or Character? And if character is True Beauty and I know that to be true, why do I still chase after that which is perishable and deceitful? May the Lord continue His mighty work in my sinful flesh and enable me to renew my mind and submit to His Word and live by it.

A Truly beautiful wife is NOT one who outwardly looks desirable but one of a godly Character, who honors her husband and does not draw attention to herself to be praised by others.

Knowing where my heart is. It is absolutely sinful for me to wear make-up. I feel like I am being called to a life of simplicity for the glory of God and I must submit. This is my sanctification. Being a girl who has always obsessed over her appearance and has been a performer since the age of 3 or 4 dancing, cheerleading and modeling this is very challenging. I know that my motivation for wearing make-up is sinful but I understand God's will and believe that this is necessary for my sanctification. Praise the Lord for humbling, pruning and revealing these things. If in reading you too realize that this is an area where you are struggling, I encourage you to join me in total surrender lifting up holy hands thanking the Lord for lovingly pointing these truths out to us. Let us prize that which He prizes, living in light of eternity. May He have His way!

Being confident of this very thing, that He
which hath begun a good work in you will perform it
until the day of Jesus Christ
 Philippians 1:6
